A while ago I posted about my cancer. I want to post an update.

After I had a third of my left lung removed, I started chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is when you begin to wonder if the cure is worse than the disease. I was told by my medical team and other cancer survivors that I might be able to continue working while undergoing treatment, and that was my hope. Unfortunately, that was not my experience.

The side effects were life-interrupting and sometimes severe. I’m not going to list them here, suffice it to say I had side effects I didn’t know could be side effects. I was hospitalized several times because of them, even after they changed my chemo protocol. During this time there was very little I could do from a physical standpoint. Working was not one of those things. Some of you may immediately think about what happened financially. In a very nonchalant way, God provided.

He simply provided through normal channels and in some unexpected ways. Finances were not a problem. We did not lose anything or become overburdened by debt. The strange part on that front was how completely and effortlessly God provided. It was a miracle without the miracle fanfare.

Gratefully, I am past that part. In the latter part of the chemotherapy, I was able to pick up the pen, so to speak, and commence to complete a project I had started and stopped before. For the past few years I have wanted to write a book on the Parable of the Talents. I was able to begin that once again.

My current treatment is immunotherapy. Fortunately for me, it is much more tolerable than chemotherapy. I have been able to return to work, if only on a part-time basis, which is a great move forward. I have also been able to finish the book.

Though I am physically challenged as far as labor is concerned, I can sit and write for hours. This has permitted me to complete something I believe God had put on my mind to do. Not to offend anyone my work is very physical, and I don’t mean to say that writing is not work.

I am still recuperating, and I still don’t know the eventual outcome, but God has been with me throughout this ordeal. I have never felt abandoned, confused, or neglected. My family has been wonderful and has gone above and beyond on my behalf.

God has been amazing. Not only has He provided, but He has also kept me company. I am learning to recognize His presence in the silence. God is loud in the silence. It is difficult to articulate, but God’s presence is strength in the darkness, hope for the present and the future. It is an anchor in the emptiness of loneliness. He is the voice that overcomes the intruders. When He sits beside you, you have peace. His strength is best felt in the quiet moments of your life. It is best summarized in the verse: “Be still, and know that I am God…” — Psalm 46:10

I almost welcome the illness, because it is there that I get closer to God. Almost welcome.

In obedience to God, I have completed the book. It will be available soon. The name of the book is Talanton. https://talantonbook.com/.

Through the heart attack, the lung cancer, and all the illnesses in between, God has been faithful and present. Please continue to pray for me, because God hears your prayers and responds to them for my good and His glory.

An update

Life is better with Jesus.
That is why Talanton exists.
